****PART ONE****
***REMOVAL OF THE CONTROL UNIT ON THE ROADSTER***

Most owners with the straight out wiper and light control stalks from 1989 - 1995 MK 1's will not realize that pushing the wiper stalk forward will give one single wipe, and pulling back will give you washer jet spray and wiping until you let go....

Most don't realize they have this function because it is not working. Its very simple to sort out and cure: you do not need a new stalk cluster and you do not need to remove the steering wheel.
Basically it all works on copper contacts and they have become tarnished with age and need to be refreshed and cleaned. The first part will go through the procedure of removal on the Roadster and the second part will show how to take it all apart in more detail on the bench, which we did simply to enable better photos and easier viewing. The whole process should take around 30 to 45 minutes...

You will need...

1 x medium phillips driver
1 x 1/4 ratchet, small extension and 8 mm socket,
1 x medium flat driver,
1 x sheet of medium wet and dry,
1 x rag,
1 x cleaning solution.

Remove the steering column trim by the two phillips head screws ....

****PART TWO****
*** SPLITTING THE WIPER CONTROL UNIT ON THE BENCH***

We are using a full wiper stalk unit on the bench so it also highlights better the release screws, hook and loop etc so think as it being on the roadster to get to the point of separating the control box to be taken fully apart....

Locking bolt at the bottom.....

This is the point where it would be away from the roadster to work on.....
Get the medium flat driver and start to pry the locking tabs that holds the control unit together; there are 3 holding it in total. Just be aware that they are plastic so don't go all gorilla - be a bit gentle.

Once back to together the slider contacts need to be in the correct place. The black one needs to line up with N Neutral and the white one needs to be at the INT . The stalks need to also be in the right alignment so the wiper stalk needs to be fully up/off and the light stalk needs to be in the middle in the off position. Then offer the control unit on a angle to the middle so you can re hook into the body and hinge down until it lines up together again...

And then just follow section one in reverse order from how we removed it, re attaching the light plugs, black first ,then white, spin the unit and listen for the click of the plastic locking tab locking into place at the top, re attach the wiper control plugs white plug first and then the black plug. Then tighten the bottom locking bolt, tidy up the wires, align the bottom cowl so the centre phillips bolt hole slots onto the ignition barrel and screw the bolt in. Add the top cowl and click it into the bottom cowl and screw in the 3 x phillips trim screws that holds the cowling tight together, and then hook the steering column trim at the top and hinge towards the dash and screw the 2 x phillips trim screws to the bottom of the trim. And thats it job done.
