Something raised its head the other day as parts become harder to find....someone got in touch about a electric window switch for a MK 2 NB RS import with the Auto function. Easy enough you might think, which it is if you want a new one/ready for a big search or get a Mk 2 NB none auto switch..
So what about just fitting a Mk 2.5 NBFL auto switch ? Loads about second hand and cheap. Well that sounds easy until you get one and fit one either way around and find out the wiring is completely different and it won't work...
But with this guide it will be possible and work. We will work on that it is a Mk 2 NB and we are swapping out for the newer Mk 2.5 NBFL switch .
I will show the differences between the switches and how to tell them apart...
MK 2 NB Auto switch( N053)....
MK 2 NB standard switch (NC11)..
MK 2.5 NBFL Auto switch...(NC66/NC72/NC87).....
Mk 2 NB has the connection sockets at the bottom and plugs in at the front. MK 2.5 NBFL connection socket is also at the bottom but plugs in from the back ,
MK 2 NB on the left ,MK 2.5 NBFL on the right....
The Plug connections are the same on both versions as are the wires, but they are the opposite way around to work on a Mk 2 NB, so the plug from left to right from the cable side ( back/locking lug at the top) are as follows...
White with red chaser, Green with red chaser, Black, Brown, Red with green chaser, Red with black chaser....
We need to completely swap the wire connections in the plug to be mirror imaged to the above, so we need to remove the connections...
You will need a small jewellers screw driver, and be gentle, do not go at it like a gorilla. The pics for reference have been done on a worktop to help produce clearer pics. You will need to do this in the roadster and personally I would remove the centre arm rest to give more space to work with on the plug.
Turn the plug over and you will see a castle piece that needs to be removed first, insert the small driver and start to pry up to pop it free from the body; you will need to work your way along and the sides, once free put it free somewhere safe .
Looking at the ribs that hold in the wire connections: you will see that they step down. Gently insert the driver to make it bridge upward...
Using the driver again insert gently towards the front so it goes between the locking tab and the body of the connection and then put the driver in the hole where the locking tab would be and lever forwards which will push the connection free and out to the back. If it does not, then the locking tab is still holding it, so repeat the freeing process, remembering to just be gentle again as we do not want to damage anything...
Push the tab back down flat again and continue to just repeat the process one by one until they are all out....
It is time to to re insert the connections into the plug again but in a mirror image of how they were removed, which will now be from left to right....
Red with black chaser, Red with green chaser, Brown, Black, Green with red chaser, White with red chaser,..the apposite to what it originally was.... now personally i pulled up the rear most of the locking connection hole so it will re lock ok....
Once they are all in place and are happy, re insert the castle locking piece and make sure it sits completely flat with the rest of the body...
And thats it job done , plug in the mk 2.5 switch and try it....just a couple of pics for reference... re worked on the left, original on the right...
Rewokded...
Original...
And some pics of the switches, Mk 2.5 as the reworked plug and the Mk 2 one as the original on the work top how they would sit in the roadster....
You will not need to do this again unless you want to re fit a MK 2 switch, but at least you can now fit a later switch which is easier to find and cheaper now and in the future..
My thanks to Andrew from Autolinkmx5, Steve from Goodwood Sportscars, and Dan Dan the sprayer man , with their help the guide would not of been possible.
