Mk 2/2.5 1998 to 2005 NB recall UK mx5/miata and Roadaters???...Nov 2018 onwards...

Postby Mazda Mender » Tue Jan 29, 2019 8:46 pm

OK, where do I begin with this as there is a lot of drama knocking about over lack of info on this recall which was Originally issued in 2003....

This is From FB mazdamenders tech help....

There appears to be a Mazda issue here. The Mazda dealers can see there is a recall on their computer system but it does not come up with any detail to advise what the issue is. There are two possible recals one on MK2.5 car foglight bulbs shorting to earth in their metal body but the recall is for both Mk2 and Mk2,5 cars. Only the Mk2.5 had these foglights. Not all Mk2 and Mk2.5 cars have recalls but a good selection of them have a recall. The other thought is it is a recall on air bags that can explode without warning. At this time Mazda UK technical support are just as confused.

And a very long winded dragged out thread on the subject that still never got to the issue and resolve after 3 months and 3 pages..... https://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/yaf_posts ... ecall.aspx

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now you see how the confusion spreads, so here goes the correct facts for owners including the import roadsters that is will not flag up on....

This started in November of 2018, flagging up on the new system in place with the DVLA here at MOT time (which is great) with any dealer call backs , the trouble is that the dealerships have no idea what it is yet, all they know is that it is a recall on the front fog lights on the Mk 2 from 1998 to the MK 2.5 2005, but they say it is an old recall and is not still out standing...total confusion??
Well it is a new one, and is a simple thing which to be honest I think it is down to being fitted incorrect by the owners..

So the back ground...
This has stemmed from the good old US of A Miata guys....while some were driving they would feel a loss of power and in some cases stop/cut out, this was put down to a short..

Which turned out to be the bulb from the front fog lights had worked loose and fallen out shorting to the body work..

Now this is a old recall that looks like it was never seriously actioned from 2003, so as been reissued for some reason, maybe a clerical error ???...but until then this is all the reason why to stop confusion....

Now not all had them so it was hit and miss, the units at fault are the CIBIE and VALEO units which could be fitted to any of the MK 2/2.5s,all have a twist and lock in feature with the bulbs but some also had the added safety of a add metal spring clip that locked down onto the body of the unit over the bulb holder which is fine, they are concerned with the ones with the added locking clip missing, although I do think it is down to them not being clicked into place correct ? The very later 2.5's versions had different units of about the last 2 years of production.
So the recall is to check the front fog lights and if so are the clips missing if they are in place ..all good, if not , I am not sure of the resolve at the minute at the time of writing (unless they are showing owners "how to fit them correct"?)this but will inform as soon as I know, as this recall will not cover the Japanese imports over here which is I thought is also an issue for those owners.

The Mazda recall states.....

As a test we went on to the Mazda portal today and look at my 1999 MK2 put together late 98 it shows this, an imported Mk 2 Roadster gives "nothing outstanding"

There seems to be a much tighter VIN number spread from Mazda US...

AN OTHER PIECE OF DATA US Based

Make : MAZDA Model : MIATA Year : 2001
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V206000 Recall Date : JUN 02, 2003
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:FOG LIGHTS
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 64000
Summary:
ON CERTAIN MINI VANS AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE SOCKET HOLDER IN THE FOG LIGHTS IS INSTALLED IN THE LAMP CASING USING PRESSURE. DURING OPERATION OF THE FOG LIGHT, THE HEAT FROM THE BULB CAN EXPAND THE SOCKET HOLDER. THE EXPANSION CAN FORCE THE SOCKET HOLDER REARWARD. AFTER REPEATEDLY BEING SUBJECT TO THIS EXPANSION, IF THE FOG LIGHT IS ALSO SUBJECTED TO VIBRATION DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, THE SOCKET HOLDER WITH THE BULB HOLDER AND THE WIRING HARNESS MAY SEPARATE FROM THE FOG LIGHT CASING.
Consequence:
SHOULD THIS OCCUR, THE BULB SOCKET AND THE HARNESS CAN DROP INSIDE THE BUMPER AND IN THE WORST CASE, THE HEAT GENERATED CAN CAUSE THE BUMPER TO BURN.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SPRING TO PREVENT THE SOCKET HOLDER FROM COMING OFF THE LAMP CASE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JUNE 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT MAZDA AT 1-800-222-5500.
Notes:
MAZDA RECALL NO. 1103F. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

Citroen picasso 2000 to 2010...

MG ZT/ZTT, Rover 75. 2001 2005...

And funny enough no recalls over the front fog light off any of the other makes of vehicles....strange that don't you think...

The later front fog lights fitted to the Mk 2.5 NB's mazda Mx5/Roadsters/Miata were different than the ones stated above..on the 2004 and 2005 versions( also on the other vehicle makes we mentioned) were VALEO units...

The solution resolve from Mazda?...

*****to be added when we know*****

Our solution...
Check to see if you have the locking springs as shown above,if not , add the missing spring or check that the bulb holder is seated firmly and solid in place...
And thats it really...so the imported NB Roadsters that will not be flagged up at MOT time...you now know what it is about, how it came to be.what the problem is and a resolve
.

Drive safe,enjoy your mazdas...
