Annual catalytic converter replacement

Postby GlennyGills » Thu Apr 15, 2021 4:15 pm

Hi All,
Just about every year I have to fit a new cat converter due to high CO readings, but H/C and lambda readings are fine and within limits. So I thought I would start a thread to document things checked and the progress if any..

When I got the car home I did an ECU code check with the LED.
I got codes 10, 14, 14, & 13.
Code 10 is air thermistor - tried cleaning connections and the MAF no improvement awaiting replacement MAF.
Code 14 is atmospheric pressure done by the ECU. I checked the ECU all dry & clean. Sprayed contact cleaner on connections - no change
Code 13 does not exist. This is an anomaly.

The car starts and runs fine.

To be continued. :-D

I have been doing a bit of research and I am wondering about possible overfuelling. One website that sells cat convertors says that if H/C reading is above 55ppm then it is overfuelling and will kill the cat. My MOT exhaust readings are typically 55+ppm. I managed to find an old 2013 MOT sheet and saw 25 ppm. The lambda is normal in the MOT test results, which doesn't indicate to me that it is not running rich BUT at 55ppm H/C ???

Can I ask what reading other people get with their cars mk1 1.8's ?

I am going to fit a new oxygen sensor and a new coolant thermistor ASAP.

Well I cleared the ECU. Fitted a replacement AFM and got the same 10, 14, 14,13 flashes for the LED. I have now ordered a MX5 Tech Diagnostic tester to see what that says.

Well I splashed out on the MX5 Tech diagnostic tester.

When I plugged it in and ran the diagnostics, it shows only one fault. Barometric sensor.

So I guess the led flashes were misleading.

I understand the barometric sensor is in the ecu, so can’t be changed. No problem as I don’t live on Snowdon.

Will check the oxygen sensor later.

Anyway I now have a fancy new toy.

I was never any good at counting flashes so that's why I bought the MX5Tech reader. Comes in handy as I service a couple of local mk1s for friends.

As for a barometric sensor, don't know MX5s could predict the weather as well.

1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

Life is a journey, best travelled topless in an MX5!!

Some MX5s are good at weather. If the car is on the road, it is dry. If it is in the garage it is raining. :-D

Great bit of kit.
Do you have a O2 sensor to test with?
