'90 mk1 vspec - leak around window / door seal

Hi All,

I'm hoping that someone has seen this before and can suggest something before I pull my hair out.

My wife picked up a mk1 eunos vspec at the back end of last year in the need of some much needed TLC. We tried to buy it a couple of years back but the guy wanted too much, and when I saw it was still there I decided to take another punt.

Original roof had cracked at the bottom of the frame, which I thought was the cause for the water in both driver and passenger footwell, but after replacing with a mohair, i'm still getting water ingress - but from what I can see, it looks like water is entering at the top of the door / window seal, then managing to somehow run around the inside of the seal where it clips on to the pinch weld on the inside of the door opening, if that makes sense.

When it does rain, the water runs down that route, exiting where the door opening turns from vertical to horizontal, ending up in the footwell.

I've tried reseating the original seal, another seal from a mk2.5 that didnt leak (long story), replacing the window 1/4 panel / door seal and it still doesnt fix the issue. Last thing will be to chuck a brand new seal at it, but I'm concerned it wont remedy the problem.

First thing we did was totally strip the interior, and my other half spent loads of time fully wet vacuuming the tan carpeting out of the car, cleaning up the seats, all the plastics etc etc, before it got a full fluids service, belts, brakes from the later mk2.5.

I really want her to be able to enjoy it without worry about if there's a bit of rain about - so any suggestions or things to check would be very appreciated.

Thanks
Dale

Hi MM,

Its definitely not coming in from the drainage tubes / rain rail at the back - these were all stripped out, cleaned and replaced, and flushed with water to ensure the drainage tubes were emptying correctly. The rain rail was replaced with a new one.

I can see water on the inside of the seal and the pinch weld of the door opening, and light trails of water from the front of the door / window seal itself, running down the inside of the kick panel and into the footwell, pooling in the forward floorpan bung.

It was left with no interior panels or carpet whilst it was all being cleaned, its definitely not coming from the rear of the car.

As the windscreen frame header seal been messed with?, these can cause major water getting past if they have not been removed correct or fitted correct, there is also the latch guide nipples, if they are broken or missing it stops the S/T frame header making a correct seal, and there is also the 1/4 light seal , if that is dry and out of shape it will not seal , there is also the front most hood seal which meets all these to make a seal, these all need to be checked, i would also check for any splits, rips or tears in the seals even more so in the rain channel of the windscreen header seal where it fixes to the frame.
If you were close by i would find it.

Hey M-M,

The windscreen frame header seal (runs up the a-pillar across the top of the windscreen and down the other a-pillar) has been replaced with one from a later mk2.5 which didnt leak, which resulted in the same issue - is there any appreciable difference in the mk1 vs mk2.5 header seals? Your comment about the split / tears etc in the rain channel might be worth checking more in depth because of where the water is coming in.

Is there a "best" method of testing this other than running water down the rain channel itself?

As is we've recently put a full set of new shocks and springs on the car, so have been enjoying the weather, but it would be nice to be able to take it out any not worry about it raining!

I'm down in Castleford - if you're ever over this way and I still have the issue, would be excellent to get a second pair of eyes.

Hey M-M

Excuse the late response - new job and busy weekends!

I thought I had a decent amount of pics of this, but it appears not - I'm going to have to take some more.

This has a brand new OEM seal on - if you zoom in, you can see beads of water on the inside of the panel lip which follow the line of the door opening and exit where the seal ends, flowing over the top of the white wire tray. Its pretty much identical on the other side. I cant see any water on the vertical part of the lip above those few beads.

If you can tell me where the best place to take the photos, I'll give it a shower this weekend and get some better ones.

I added the photo to help.

Basically you can just drag and drop the photos onto the post.
then move your cursor to where you want to add and clock "Place Inline"

Good luck

Its not sealed correct and the water is getting past and running on the inner section of the trim, more than likely where to fixes to the frame with the fixing trim button under the gutter run.
