A lot of owners are installing the MK2/2.5 NB dash and interiors into their MK 1's NA as the harder wearing MK 1's NA out live the weaker MK 2/2.5 NB with tin worm.
This is a mod to retro fitting the MK 1 NA headlight maintenance raise switch the the Mk2/2.5 NB dash.......
This will show how to re-work the double switch into one switch, I fitted it to a blanker where the electric mirror switch would of been ,If you are converting a MK 1 NA 1.8 with electric mirrors, you might want to re use this space for the electric mirrors from the Mk1 NA loom? or just re use the Mk1 NA switch, but it is down to personal choice, the idea was originally fired at me by Andrew at Autolinkmx5 who planted then seed for me to take one apart....
I was asked by Shaun for a walk through guide, so hope this helps others too....
****CLICKING ON THE IMAGES WILL ENLARGE THEM FOR BETTER VIEWING******
So you will need...
1x MK 1 NA hazard and raise switch with a length of loom and plug ,
1x MK2/2.5 NB1/2 electric window blanking switch trim.
Tools required...
12 volt Electric tester, a simple spike and light tester is more than good enough.
Medium flat screwdriver
Dramel tool, (axe saw blade and file)
Drill,
Step down drill bit,
Electrical tape,
Glue gun,Glue, black or clear silicon sealant, etc
Heat shrink,
Soldering iron and solder,
Electric crimp connections if you don't want to solder it in.
So the bits we will need...
Left to right.. back of a mk1 NA twin switch ...mk2/2.5 NB blanker switch trim for the electric mirror switch..
So we need to dismantle the MK1 NA switch taking out of all the bits....
Get your small screwdriver...
And start to pop the back of the switch apart remembering where all the bits go..( take pics on your phone if it helps)...
Now the next step is cutting it all correct so we can reuse only one half of it ...
The lines are guide lines, the main thing that we need to do is cut it so it is flat to where the hazard switch would of been and that the socket all fits at the rear and that the circuit board does not lose what we still need, I have overemphasized where to cut in yellow....
So once it is all apart , get the cutting tool of choice ....
Cut the screw lugs off etc...
Now onto the body of the switch....
Slide in the circuit for a double check that it is marked up correct....
Then cut the circuit board....
Now cut the back cover ...
Time to put it all back together again....
Make sure the spring is in the side of the switch the bend goes to the bottom, then the long end of the pin goes through the body with the smallest to the top and over the spring then put the plastic latching section on top in the run on it, does not matter where at this point...
And slide the whole thing back into the switch case with the plastic latch sliding onto the grooves for it also....
Now get the long spring and insert into the socket on the back of the switch...
Now get the circuit board and push the socket pins back into the back plate.....
Now we need to slide the circuit board into the grooves in the body while the rear switch spring locates onto the nipple on the back of the socket and push it all back together so it clicks into place...
Cut up and trial fitted....
Cut/grind back everything flat on the back of the blanker switch and drill your hole for the Mk 1 switch button to fit through...
Smooth the switch body down and test fit into the blanker switch...
Once your happy with the fit, we need to bond the two together, I used some Automotive sealant I had to hand, clear or black will work best for this, or a glue gun...
Then once pushed together add some more so it stays put...
Get some electrical tape to seal the open end of the switch off ,so we re cover the electrics with in .....
And then fit it to the roadster Hopefully you have the plug to wire up with, luckily the MK 1 NA Dual switch plug is the same as the MK 2/2.5 NB electric mirror plug.......
And installed.....
Wire connections will vary depending on the plug you use and the extending you would of done from the original plug...
But the basics are for lift and lower pins are.....
This will follow but is easy to do...
****PICS & write up*****
