Possible Rear main seal Failure ?

Postby EunosPilot » Sun Mar 31, 2024 9:33 pm

Hi,

Hoping for some advice - the Eunos ( 1.6 Auto ) developed a bit an oil slick underneath over the winter, and getting under today, it looks like it's coming for the bell housing area ( pics below ). I checked the usual suspect (CAS) , and the recent o-ring replacement seems to be holding up. The rest of the area above the bell housing seems dry, which makes me think the rear main seal may be leaking. I got the camera into the bell housing opening and it looks like oil up inside on the area the crankshaft runs through.

Can someone confirm, or is there another problem I'm missing?

Thanks!

Two of the images don't seem to have loaded , but it can be only seals really , if it's a thin oil then it's a dry rear crank seal , if it's thick then it's the gear box seal.

Thanks for the response - It is definitely engine oil in this case. Coming to the conclusion that either the engine or the autobox has to come out to fix this. I'm not sure which will be easier in the long run. I want to replace things like the engine mounts and the cambelt, and access underneath to the gearbox will be difficult. As long as the aircon ( which still works ) can be left in the car untouched, the engine out might be the way to go.

With her being an auto we recommend bringing the engine and box out as one and then splitting it, the reason i say this is because whether you go leave the engine in situ and drop the box or leave the box in situ and pull the engine , you will have issues re aligning the torque convertor and gearbox shafts, best doing it out of the roadster and dropping it all back in as a whole unit, sometimes more is less in most cases , this being one of them.
once out the seal will take you minutes to remove and install , use a OE seal, and you can get cheap enough a seal guide to make sure it goes in correct.
