ABS warning light

Postby chadz » Wed Sep 06, 2023 5:14 pm

The warning light for the ABS system on my 1998 mk2 roadster has illuminated and remains on. Would an OBD11 fault reader help me diagnose the problem ? And is my mk2 OBD11 compliant?.

Thanks

Dont take this as Mazda gospel but I think the 98s are obd2.
1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

MK 1/MK 2 from 1989-2001 are obd1 so you will need a flash code reader from the likes of Autolinkmx5 or the reader from Mx5tech, it will be more than likely a speed sensor on one of the uprights, which is more often than not near side ( passenger) because of all the crud they can pick up, you can give them check over with them being a magnetic pick up they can get crud stuck to them giving a false reading ,also check the castle sections on the bearing hub, they can get full of crud to give false reading also , the fluid is not low is it? ,you can also check the sensors with a multi meter.
We make up a simple tool with a sensor and a front and rear plug to be able to just plug in to find the bad one to swap out if needed, there is a guide on how to make one on the forum.

But she is defo not OBD II that was from 2001 to date bud.

The MX5Tech unit will not advise on MK2 faults. It will on the MK1 up to about 1995 but it does not recognise the ABS fault codes on the Mk2 1998 to late Autumn 2000.
1999 Mk2 Silver
2008 Mk3 Copper Red gone
