Brakes Not Smooth - Now Fixed

Postby Barn1e » Tue Aug 06, 2013 8:39 pm

Hi, I have been searching but not found something on following problem. Car is MY51, 1.8 Sport. We have owned it for 2 years and not had any problems. Recently the brakes started to judder when applied at speed and when used at slow speed, there is a sense of coming on and off slowly.

It looked like warped discs, but they and the pads have all been changed and it is still there. The tyres were 9 years old and so overdue to change. Done that, no improvements. Wheels balanced at change and tracking done. Still no better.

Had all the bushes checked and told they are OK. Wheel bearings also checked. Rolling road test for MOT was OK. Thinking of changing the brake pad carriers.

Anyone got other suggestions, especially if low cost!

I am wondering if there is an electronic gizmo that controls brake pressure distribution or perhaps it could be the ABS - it is as if it is a very very slow use of ABS.

Thanks in advance

If everything as been changed as you say? than i would look at the calipers or a crushed brake line somewhere, is the ABS pump working?

Hi Barn1e, not far from me then. Why not come over to the Mark Cross meet on Saturday near Crowborough and one or two of us can at least have a look to see if we can ascertain the problem.

Details here http://mx5driver.com/thread/2851/mark-c ... day-august

Lazza, Nick
Despite my best efforts, I cannot get there tomorrow. Shame because I am built a long "to do list" and would be great to bounce things off those that know. May be next time.

Gearbox oil
Slave cylinder
Clutch release bearing but not before above
Check toothed ring for ABS for corrosion and faulty signal (might try brakes with ABS fuse removed)
Various seals on gearbox (mentioned in another thread)
And on and on

Son his budding mechanic at uni and wants to take things apart, i guess I will have to put them back together :-D

My last posts took this somewhat off topic. So, now back to the brakes.

I thought the sensation was like the ABS cutting in and out, perhaps due to a faulty sensor or cog ring. So, I removed the ABS fuse and drove the car. No change, so I don't think the ABS is causing the sensation of the brakes grabbing and releasing.

Next option may be to change the pad carriers - brake discs and pads have been changed already and it is on new tyres. The problem existed before all this changes.

Do you have spacers on, and have you checked the calipers are working correct.

No spacers that I have noticed when taking whees off. Because I had the car in garage for the 12 year service I had them do the discs and pads rather than do myself. I assume that as they pushed the pistons into the housing that none are sticking or they would have flagged that as an issue.

Problem existed prior to service so now trying to dod the diagnosis and fix myself rather than rack up more costs.
