Hi all
As the ride in my 5 has become increasingly "bouncy" I think it's time to invest in new rear shocks and springs.
There's a vast choice out there so I'm trying to get some advice on what to go for.
I'm looking at the mid price range and purely for road use. I'm used to the original MK1 bilsteins so am ready for a bit more comfort now!
My car is a Eunos Roadster VR limited.
Many thanks
What you put in, you'll get back ten fold

Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
Re: Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
No expert in this but when I asked Wayne aka M-m, he suggested that I consider swapping to standard mk2 suspension units and springs.
That's the plan later in the year.

Budget is £200.
She's used 6 months of the year over the Spring/Summer although I'd like to start using her all year round. Used mainly local commuting apart from weekends away and usually one long road trip. Want to take her over to France later this year. Enjoy a good blast round the country lanes too!
I prefer the standard look, not lowered.
Thanks.

Re: Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
Then you want a set of Mk 2 standard suspension, but MUST be off a Mk 2 NOT a Mk 2.5 as the spring rate is higher, they will be in your budget and still look standard at the same time upgrading, you will lose nothing on handling and cornering but gain a smoother comfier ride for road use as they have more travel to take the pot holes etc.

Re: Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
Thanks, will I need springs from a MK2 to go with them?
Re: Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
Nobody has said this yet which I'm surprised by but you shouldn't change just the rear suspension. If you are changing to a setup different to what's on there now you have to do the full set of front & rear.
As Wayne says, Mk2 suspension is a good upgrade. Buy a full set of shocks, springs and top-mounts taken off the donor car. There is no reason for them to have been taken apart.

Thanks Lazza, I didn't realise both needed changing. Sorry but what did you mean about buying a full set taken from the donor car? Thanks

The full set up....= complete units shockers, springs and top mounts ready to fit and swap out....all 4 corners, you cannot mix and match, all four will need to be swapped unless you just swap out for the MK 1 items just at the rear only.

Re: Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
As Wayne says. The shocks can be removed from the car fully built with the springs and top mounts attached. That way there is no need to have to build it all together.

Go for it of you're interested in them. I haven't fully decided which way I want to go with the set up yet. It's been great to get the advice though.

Re: Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
I have standard Mk1 suspension and have an annoying knock/rattle every now and then. Had her jacked up on a four post lift and tried every joint I could for signs of play, nothing other that the nearside rear spring wasn't sitting straight on the shocker for some strange reason and had been catching the top arm.
All dismantled and checked and nothing was or at least seems bent so rebuilt and refitted and seems to be sitting straight again, But we still have a knock when we hit the odd drain.
She might have to pay a visit to Uncle M-m at some point and maybe go for the MK2 setup if all else fails.

Re: Recommendations for rear shocks and springs
Ok, so after the advice given on here I am still considering swapping my complete MK1 set up to MK2. Can I just clarify a couple of points.
Will my ride height definitely NOT be affected? ie it won't sit any higher than it does now? I've just been reading Yolo's thread on the suspension swap and he states his sat a bit too high after fitting.
From what I understand, having a VR limited means the car sits slightly lower than standard so I'm just checking whether I would need to adjust anything on the mk 2 set up to achieve the same height as it is now?
Other than that I understand it's a straight swap out in all four corners.
Thanks just needing a bit more clarification before I decide to go for it. With the help of a friend I want to have a go at doing the work myself.
