New front hub needed?

Postby Sam » Sun May 20, 2018 7:28 pm

Hi,

Changed my mk3 front discs and pads following a sticking caliper and apparently warped disc. Did the unwarped side first, and it struck me how 'knackered' the warped side bearing seemed in comparison. Much noisier, spins more freely and a bit wonkily - looks like I needlessly changed the brakes.

Should I just bite the bullet and get a new hub? It's only done 65k miles.

Cheers

Personally, I would bite the bullet, but is it not just the actual bearing failling, sure it can be replaced. I never cut corners on essentials.

Well I bit the bullet. Hub came off easily with a brutal attack from an eBay slide hammer, and the new one runs nice and true.

And for anyone searching how to get their PH3 disc screws undone, mine loosened when hit with a 1 inch masonry chisel tapped with a lump hammer in the general direction of undo. It completely trashed them but avoided drilling, which I find a real pain. Replaced with A2 stainless M8 X 16 countersunk screws with a 5mm hex head, a couple of quid from eBay. My new discs came with one (not two) per disc.

Cheers
