Oil Pressure Problems

Postby sylva » Wed Jun 05, 2019 2:58 pm

Hi everybody I may have stumbled across an idea to solve inconsistent oil pressure readings on the early Mk1 MX5/Eunos with the proper guages.

Over the years I have had my 92 Eunos my readings have changed almost on a daily basis. I had cleaned the spade and slide on terminal on the pressure sender on the block, this would help for a short while and then be all over the place again in short order.

Anyway I did an oil change a couple of weeks ago and as usual went to clean the terminals as I would usually do, when I slid the connector back on to the spade this time it was loose as the terminal was starting to fall apart. So what I did was cut the wire directly behind the slide on terminal and crimped on a new one. Since doing this my oil pressure readings have been spot on, noticably higher and moving in line with increases and decreases in revs. So what this suggests is that even though there were what appeared to be good contacts in the past a new connector is allowing the readings to pass to the guage because all connections are fresh and clean.

Best of all a new slide on connector only costs pennies so a very cheap way to check your oil pressure readings if you have concerns.

I hope this will be of help to somebody.

Duncan.

Something to bear in mind for future reference but to date our 91 Eunos hasn't suffered from this issue, the gauge always works as expected but if it ever does play up I know where t look first.

Sounds like a fatigue failure where the wire enters the spade. I guess to be expected after 20+ years. A great reminder to check the obvious stuff first before shelling out money on new parts etc.
